Anyone know of an inexpensive, non invasive, computerized decay detection system?

The ones I've seen are $$$, any alternatives?

1. Rubber mallet - $10.00

2. 1/2" X 12" long-fluted drill bit - $15.00

3. Resistograph - $5,000 to $8,000

4. Sonic tomography - $20,000+

5. Radar - coming soon to a tree near you

Increment borers aren't that expensive, and the hole can easily be filled with beeswax.

Never heard of using beeswax, thanks.

I've never used this tech. but seen others use it.

I never liked the idea of drilling a hole into damaged wood. Is this a concern?

Seems like a good idea to sub-out somthing like sonic tomography? Are there any companys doing this?

For purely cosmetic reasons, couldn't you buy some wooden dowel rods from the hardware store and stick a piece in the exposed holes? I'd think you could stick it in about an inch and cut it off flush, or even just have a few 1" long pieces in your pocket and stick 'em in the holes after you're done taking your core sample.
