So this is something I came up with 4 years ago, but metal 3D printing technology has only recently become affordable enough that I can make it for a reasonable price. It’s a solution looking for a problem. It was initially meant to be a simple ring integrated with a cleat for advancing srt or for coming back on long limb walks but It has lots of other potential uses. It’s not a pulley, so the mechanical advantage is not great, but it’s super lightweight and super simple. I posted it on instagram and it seems like there is a lot of interest. I think I might tweak the design a bit and make a batch of 50 or so, then offer them up for sale as experimental models.

Have you done any kind of load testing or grip ability testing?
I’ve climbed on it a bit so far and the grip is honestly maybe a bit too strong. If fully loaded it takes a little effort to disengage. I’m going to do some slip testing and try to break it next week when I get back from a weekend trip. The cleat geometry is based of marine cleats, but only from a distance. I have one though and I think I’ll scrutinize the design to see if I can get an optimal grip/release balance going.
