What oil and mixture are you using and why?

Anybody know what type of oil is the Stihl deep purple colored oil? I purchased a case a few years back and didn't know what type of oil it is, and still don't. I stopped using it but a few bottles left. No explanation of the type of oil on the labels. It looks like what could easily be on...

At least with cars, the catalytic converters when working right, helped to keep the unburnt lead from coming directly out the pipe, though very late in the game pertaining to lead in gas. With two cycles if you are using the lead content, you are getting a cocktail of TEL in with the...

Guys that used to work in lead mines had a variety of undesirable mental effects. Just what you want to have happening, hallucinations down in a mine, one of the results. One theory is that the fall of Rome was due to lead poisoning causing mental deficiencies in the emperors. Lots of lead in...

Av-gas isn't that much higher in octane than what premium gas is, if you are comparing pump gas RON rating to aviation fuel MON rating. It seems that what is used in AV-gas to give the higher octane, is the highly toxic ingredient, Tetraethyl lead, once an ingredient in auto gas as well, until...

What oil and mixture are you using and why?

Aviation gas is a different species of gas, something to do with the mix of heavy and light molecules. Likely the stuff for planes isn't good for saws.

What oil and mixture are you using and why?

Lots of the older saws seem to do well with the oil rich mixes, no problems. I regularly do maintenance on some for an older guy that still putters around in the woods. I think he is 24:1, and his saws have great longevity. These days oils are better, and saws are built to more refined...

Leon, lots of different opinions on it. If the higher octane fuel also has a greater amount of alcohol additive added, sometimes the case, it may not be a good thing, resulting in a hotter burn. Higher octane in itself is supposed to make for slower ignition and cooler temps, so recommended...

Bike oils do give you a lot of diversity of selection, something to ponder at the home center store. I might be standing in that aisle for ten minutes, the same one that sells car perfumes. :|: No need to look up on the top shelf, those are the super cheap oils by unknown companies.

I'm curious if there is something particular about saws that requires a different oil from motorcycles for best operation? A couple years ago I switched from Stihl dino oil to bike oil, now full synthetic. It is real good quality, i believe, and seems quite alright. Still, it isn't chainsaw...

Same here, Chris, with a number of different brands over a lengthy period. Never had anything happen that lead me to think that it is the oil. There probably is a good, better, and best, but good might be good enough.

The Castrol I get here in Japan comes from Malaysia. i don't have a clue what that is about. There is an international race circuit in Malaysia, however.

There are definite differences in name brand oils, and some of the oil brands have different products that have different ratings. They have really broken down the rating system with the JASO, devised because the Japanese didn't think the rating system in the US was analytically sufficient...

What oil and mixture are you using and why?

I wouldn't trust any oil as being better because it is made by a certain manufacturer. You have to break down the saws over time to see wear and carbon deposits, then have something to compare it to. I like a Castrol product because I think it gives better acceleration and I dig the smell...

Pretty much the same here, Leon, Our premium has to be at least 100 octane.

Thanks, Stig, So, my conclusion is that if 2 gallons is considered a heavy user, then I have to figure that even the more expensive oil isn't really a cost that much needs to be considered.

How much gas mix do you guys use per day on average?

What oil and mixture are you using and why?

Switching over to the considerably more costly Castrol power 1 racing at around $13 per liter (how it is sold here), I figured out that the cost at 40:1 is about 50 cents per gallon. Is that expensive? It doesn't seem like a heck of a lot.

Yes, a lot of guys were using it, but for some reason it became no longer available.

I started using this Castrol product in a 40:1 mix, a complete synthetic. The advertising spiel is that it is for high performance engines and it gives faster acceleration, and darned if that seemed to be what I found, at least in a modded saw. I brought some to a job with my usual mix and...
