Dan, what's the reasoning behind those cuts? It seems that if you were able to reach the top to make the notch/plunge/backcut, you could just as easily have notched and cut it normally while the skidsteer pulled. Granted I weren't there, but I'd hate to leave a tree nearly severed that close to...
