You know, I've got the splice kits but I don't think it's worth the bother. Just get a new tape and be done with it. A couple of tips... don't out walk your tape and a don't get a twist bind in it and all will be good!
We always stick the nail in so you can pull it out from a bucking length distance without having to walk back to the end of the log. That set up looks awkward to do that.
Me too probably, but I have heard good things about the husky tapes. Not impressed with the clip however. I like this style used on Spencer's...enough that I use it for my keys.
Burnham and I would use our tapes for measuring distance away from the tree for height measurement with either a clinometer or a relaskop. Slope correction tables a must in steep country
I should add the length is sort of depending on how you need to use it. 50 feet is fine for log lengths but if you need to go out further for measuring tree height then a 75 is warranted.
Also figure out if you want a diameter tape on one side to measure dbh.
