Great observation. I guess if you need to have the tree change direction during the middle of the fall, it seems like you would have to hang around the stump longer, and use your saw to manipulate the hinge, or throw in a step dutchman when the time is right to turn the stem. This would...

i usually face the tree in the direction i need to put the tree. so let's say the tree has a side lean to the right......need to pull it to the left, say 90 degrees. i face the tree towards the intended lay (90 deg. to the left of natural lean)....throw in the whizzy on the left quarter of the...

reply to stig: i think gutting the hinge would depend on the strength of the wood fibers. A Doug Fir might require it, where a softer wood such as a pine, might not. also, i think it would depend on how much you would need the pull to reach out of the lean. maybe better to leave a narrow...

will get to that.............using the helmet cam didn't give a good view of the undercut closing, just the tree coming down, but there is a good view of the wedging sequence. maybe later this eve I will edit it up and get it posted.

jp...jeffry pine ................same family different elevation, though. the pondos seem to grow fatter, larger. from my experience, the wood structure seems about the same. maybe Burnham or Jerry can elaborate. Also, here is my first attempt at the stump with the whizzy...

here is a heavy leaning JP, which was swung away from its lean. the undercut is placed in the desired direction of fall. as you view the pictures the lean was heavy to the left of the frame. swung towards the undercut and the direction of the whizzy.

Just got out of the woods from some haz tree felling. Used a whizzy to swing a 40" heavy RF away from the roadway. Worked great. One thing to keep in mind is to remember to shore up the backcut on the heavy lean side with a tight wedge or 2, and as you sweep around to the tension side, follow...

thought......................can a german increase the chances of a barber chair, if the tree is a heavy leaner? since the german is a verticle cut, runs the same way as a tree would split up the center.

wow...............seems like that would turn a tree complely 90 deg..........better move your house out of the way.........

re: whizzy and german.............for example: If a tree has a favor to the left, and you want to fall it more to the right, when you face the undercut to the desired lay (right)......if you use a whizzy or german, when the tree begins its fall, will the tree pull past the undercut because of...

how does using a wedge come into play with a whizzy? including a swing dutchman; or any other wood fibre inhancement? Would you still use wedges to help bring the tree around or simply as a safety wedge, once the offside is cut?
