Do you mean a half hitch on the ball with the running end in addition to the wraps around the hitch?
...so that the full load of the pull would be born by the half hitch?
SeriousTreesAZ, per Sean's concern, from your excellent pictures it appears the rope coming off the hitch (working/running end?) isn't contacting an edge of the trailer hitch.
Evidently you are satisfied that none of the other rope wraps will be contacting any hard edges either during the heavy...
Got it!
Also, I think I am going to re-evaluate my thoughts on rigging with the idea that I want to try to keep (well) below the WWL of the weakest link.
Thanks Brian. Yes I have too and I have done it before, and heard it a lot, but something in me always is wondering if this is a real thing or just an old wives tale if it really works.
But thanks for reminding me!
Thanks Willie. I've got some 3/4"(?) (what I believe is) stable braid.
I like the idea of the rope puller (for smaller things) because I can control it a little better than pulling with my pickup.
But I definitely appreciate the idea of having *more* heavy-duty than less.
Thanks for the safety tip, SeanKroll.
I had wondered about that aspect, but I figured Maasdam sold a lot of these rope pullers and if there were a lot of accidents they wouldn't sell them.... yeah, I know, pretty naive.
Got to get a piece of plywood now.
Thanks Brian.
When you say "Whenever I'm pulling with a machine I prefer running the line through a block attached to the base of a tree so that my pull angle is not lifting the back of the machine up off the ground."
I know this will be a dumb question... but if the rope runs through the...
Thanks Rich.
A dedicated bollard may be expensive.. but I think I get Willie's idea about the portawrap... I could attach it to my trailer hitch ball with something more heavy duty, then affix my 1/2 rope to the portawrap.
Thanks Willie.
Maybe I'm overthinking it.
For example, I have a 1/2" 3-strand rope with a Maasdam rope puller.
The average strength of the rope shows 5700 lbs
The Maasdam rope puller limit is 1500 lbs
But I understand with rope you take one-tenth to one-fifth of the average (or is it max)...
What is the best way to attach a rope (pull line) to a pickup truck trailer hitch?
I have been just simply tying my rope to the ball of my trailer hitch.
However I am afraid I am losing some of the strength of the rope at the loop because of too small a radius of the hitch ball.
Is there...
