The material doesn't bother much, but the poor quality installation does. I used brass eyelets repairing tapes, and those would have tens of pounds pulling on them regularly. The only failures I had were "freak" accidents where something thin would get between the splice and pull it apart.

This is what I'm talking about regarding the eyelets... Note how the bead doesn't go the whole way around. Might be ok, but if I repaired a tape like that, I'd take it out and do it over.

I was thinking about this on the way to the job today. Drilling a hole in a steel plate, putting the wire in the hole, peening the top, then knocking it out with a nail should work to make a rivet. I'm gonna give it a try. Just need to find some steel in a couple thicknesses.

The eyelets aren't well formed. There isn't a bead around the whole thing on one side. It could allow the leader to peel away from the tape. It may not. Dunno, but it isn't as good as it could have been. The ¼" is a little ambiguous due to how the tape's used. I'm not concerned with that. If I...

I made a couple pulls with the Husky yesterday. No complaints so far, but I think I'll tighten the recoil a smidge.

It's like everything else. You gotta do it right. The tapes I was splicing were $2 $1/ft * 100'-200', and it would have taken instruments more precise than I own to find the error when finished. That tape I just bought would be better when I finished splicing it. edit: Improved correctness...

Ok, I just tried it on my livingroom log(pictured above), and the toggle works pretty well. Doesn't take too much pressure to collapse it, and the tape comes back.

That clip was leading me away from the Husky. I have a couple I can use though, or maybe even a toy biner. That's easy to fix. What bothers me most is the poly leader and the way it's riveted. I used to have a tape repair kit, but I don't know what happened to it. If I had it, I'd probably redo...

It's not an old school nail. It's a two position toggle. As it's shown in the pic, zero is just about where the tip of the nail is if you allow some penetration. It also flips out to be more like a hooktape, where I guess you'd stick it in the top of the log, but you'd have to account for the...

Got the Husky tape today. Just a few thoughts while holding it... The eyelets attaching the nylon leader to the tape are a little sloppy. It's probably alright, but not as strong as it could be. It measures ~¼" off, but it isn't a precision device, so I'd consider that within spec I think I...

What don't you like about the Husky?

Just ordered the Husky tape. One reviewer said it was better than Spencer, but more importantly, no one said it sucked. What I liked - 66', toolless tension adjustment, came with a nail installed. Also got some candy, and a prism mount for work.

Not using modern gear, but you still have to deal with them all the time. They show up in deeds from the ~1880s down.

I did that once on a dust survey around a quarry, Had to get a sampling of tree heights, and the terrain was very rugged. I went out by myself with my Brunton and a tape to get the heights, The Brunton measures %slope, so if you pull out 100', adding/subtracting the percentages gives you the...

Longer is better except when it isn't, right? :^D If I had 100' I could use 100' sometimes, but then you've got weight, and I suspect increased mechanism jamming. My primary purpose is measuring short length logs, but I could see using it for work some time. The 66' is interesting to me...

I've been looking at these since the 90s, but they weren't quite right for my work. Well, I now have use for one, and I'm trying to decide on exactly which. The three I'm considering are Spencer, Husqvarna, and Oregon. What length do you all find most useful, and any preference on brand? I'm...
