What Do You Carry While Climbing - Basic Gear?

Meant to reply to this, and it slipped my mind. I'm definitely still interested. It's kinda hot for climbing just to do it, but if you have a weekend when you want some help, give me a yell. I can drag brush, or whatever. Take some of the load off you. I /may/ be able to handle an "emergency"...

What Do You Carry While Climbing - Basic Gear?

Hey Jed, I don't know. Jonny previously offered me a wrench and I declined. Seems to me it should go to a young guy short on money, and long on ambition. I'm just an old guy out playing games. It would be a waste of potential. I accepted stig's offer of a Grapnel since that's kind of "extra"...

    That's a little guy(or stig's a giant!). I like that. Looks nice and compact.

What Do You Carry While Climbing - Basic Gear?

Was rereading the thread, and picking up some stuff I missed. How do you like that Grapnel? I like the price better than something like the DMM captains hook, especially factoring in my potential(or not) use. Could that be fitted with a heavier line(maybe 8mm?), and be used to haul full human...

From the book... !!! I can give it a bit of English, but I'd be just as likely to fly over and retrieve the line as I would getting it back from 30'!

What Do You Carry While Climbing - Basic Gear?

I've thought about carrying my hatchet, but I've been undecided about how useful it would be. I've considered three tethered wedges, and do a straight cut through for chunking down a spar. Stick one in the back, as the cut progresses, one on each side, then finish the cut, and push the whole...

What Do You Carry While Climbing - Basic Gear?

I've been waiting on a wedge to wear out for use as a mini wedge while climbing. I have a small Stihl wedge I like a lot, but it's still a bit longer than I'd like. Obvious answer is to cut it, but I figure with enough time, the length will be right, and then I can make something out of nothing...

Some of it for me is if I forget something, I have to go down and get it; no delivery service. I try to anticipate what I need, then a little extra /just cause/.

I'm just mean. Not so lean anymore :^D I'm 220# dry, so probably ~240# with gear.

What Do You Carry While Climbing - Basic Gear?

What do you use your knife for? I've thought about hooking my Mora to my saddle. I use it all the time at work for cutting small branches, but my thinking is the silky can fill that duty without adding more stuff. I always have a SwissChamp in my pocket, and in my list above, forgot the TopSaw...

What Do You Carry While Climbing - Basic Gear?

Got me interested, so I was looking at pictures. Would having only a vertical support element work with an ascender? I was thinking a loop(paracord/steel?) that goes around the spike, and another strap(nylon/steel?) that gets screwed into the climber mounts using the provided holes.

What Do You Carry While Climbing - Basic Gear?

That's why I made the thread Mick. I tend to be a maximalist, and thrive in clutter. My work belt's the same way if I don't control myself. Keep adding 'one more thing' that isn't a big deal by itself, but you end up with the camel and the straw, and my hips hurt, and my back acts up. Kind of...

In-tree? No. On the ground? Maybe, sometimes <.< >.> :^D I almost always stick a wedge when bucking up wood. Ends up being easier for me. Not much thinking; just cutting.

The 8 goes below the hitch. The only thing that has to be unclipped is the 8 so the rope can be easily installed. After that, keep your hand on the hitch to keep it from grabbing, and do the lowering with the 8. You still have use of the hitch as an emergency backup.

What Do You Carry While Climbing - Basic Gear?

I swore I'd never climb without a handsaw again after pruning a willow, and having the cut close faster than anticipated, and trap my saw. I had to go down to get my silky to free it.

My thinking is it's easier to control speed, and I don't use heat resistant prusik cord at this point. I got some beeline awhile ago, but I don't fully trust it. It's stiff, and doesn't grab fast. I want to get familiar with it in a low consequence scenario before I rely on it as my main hitch...

I realize this will vary depending on what the exact job entails, but what do you all consider a generic climbing kit? I'm always a little unsure what to bring. This is my list for my locust using spurs + rope... Silky Chainsaw flipline Two extra prusiks Trauma kit A short length of Arborplex...
