I would immagine startup would be the biggest kicker (punny).
A 1/2hp opener only draws what, 1200watts? At startup figure it's 2-3x eh? Computer's startup loads are closer to their running wattage.
I thought about the computer backups, but I wasn't sure if they'd hold a charge from the time the power went out till you decided it was time to venture out.
I wouldn't think that'd meet Cali codes either.
A battery and an inverter and trickle charger would work, but that wouldn't be cheap.
I would think a sump pump runs at 12VDC but if it also runs at 120AC, then that should work also.
The last time a storm hit was 8/2. I got home shortly before dark, got on the tractor, and went out clearing trees that were blocking nearby roads.
Got a bit wet that night.
Our house is well insulated and the normal temp is a bit lower than most. Just ask Skwerl :P
A generator would be cool, but it'd have to be a big assed one to run the AC, which is the main bitch/gripe/complaint when the power is out for days.
Running the computers would be cool also, but...
What do we need power for? Perishable foods can hold their own for a couple days, if it's bad (more than a couple days) we can borrow a generator to keep the food, or, eat it :)
