I prefer the coated as well. It also handles the abrasion of the rope tied around the nuggest better.
When I first got started, my heavier ropes were uncoated off brand jobbers. Now, coated is the way I roll :)
From my findings, the stiffness leads to some pretty heavy reduction in the strength of the rope, putting it slightly weaker than Saftey Pro 12, or around 6klbs of strength in a bowline.
Yeah, I have some uncoated from him, but I've also came across coated that didn't look much different than uncoated aside from the feel.

You sure it isn't coated? The coating can be white.
I have some that isn't coated, although I don't use it in tree work.
There's nothing wrong with using it in a FALSE crotch, natural crotches will abrade the rope.
