With that spar directly behind it kept the barber-chair from running up to the stem higher, and then kicking back. Actually appeared to push the tree forward. It happened pretty quick. Time to bug out, either way.

I'm assuming that line was used to hold the side lean or favor. Hard to tell, but a little deeper undercut might have prevented the splitting.

Yeah, my friend Mike Davis had a mag wedge like that. Kind of looked like a hatchet. Enough mass to snug a wedged in most trees.
