I would have thought your second paragraph, although correct to an extent, is irrelevant as you were telling from the ground? I would also say that Dave uses kerf cuts below the hinge to prevent from the tear down... where as you have compromised the hinge width by directly cutting the corners...

I'd suggest Daniel nipped the sides as his bar wasn't long enough and he hasn't been taught the 2.5x bar technique of felling. ;)
