Here's my VT hitch. Notice how short I made the cord. You want the cord as short as possible without actually binding. I think the premade spliced cords from Sherrill and other places are way too long and make the VT hitch much less efficient, too much slop in the setup.
Yup, the cross loading carabiner is a MUCH bigger issue than worrying about trying to use two hitches. I'd take about half that crap off your saddle so you wouldn't have quite so many possibilities for failure and maybe you'd finish some of your jobs before dark. ;)
