Paul, I suggest you go ahead and try opening the door manually one time. That way you will know how to do it if the need arises and you don't have any electric lights to see what you're doing.
Instead of paying for it out of your own pocket, perhaps you could begin by asking the apartment managment if their garages meet current fire code due to the single entrance/ electrical power issue? If their answer isn't satisfactory then maybe call up the fire marshall and ask him?

Butch, 'clean' power is a constant voltage that doesn't fluctuate. Most power supply problems with computers and appliances are caused by spikes and dips in voltage.
In the South during the summertime, you want something strong enough to run the fridge and a small window AC unit as well as your basic lighting/ tv/ computer needs. At least for myself, trying to sleep in 98% humidity without AC is pure misery.
I'm curious about Wesley's solar setup. Can you post some more details, such as manufacturer, availability and cost? Might not help much in the 48 hours you're under a hurricane but it could help me out a lot.
