Let's fight about ropes vs wedges.

As much as I love a couple wedges, the rope was the real tool, with the Maasdam continuous rope-puller to yard ivy off of trees. I had some considerable load via the handle, and would then sometimes get the ivy to give, with dynamically bouncing on the rope, giving it the oomph it needed. I...

Let's fight about ropes vs wedges.

I wonder if the concern over set-back of a tree is a concern, really. I've chased in some many trees, different ways. Might be bore-cut through the middle of the hinge, with two more bore-cuts from the back for a triple-stacker, or cut part of the width of the back-cut and wedge it, cut more of...

I'm a quarter-cutter, half and half on the back, or cut low, push high.

I made a joke about Willie slapping a wedge to drive over a monster, maybe the high-stumped felling from spurs. He was actually checking it, or snugging it up as it went over from a pull rope or gravity, IIRC.

I skipped to the chase. Seemed like he set up a good cut and banged it over pretty well. Not pro, but well. He's a probably not a pro. Give him a break. A pro would bang that over quickly BTW. Throwlines in the woods are a PITA, IME. He doesn't need to cut his rope out from under his...

Let's fight about ropes vs wedges.

I decided to use a rope instead of a wedge yesterday. Couldn't bang it over for S**t, and I ruined that little section of rope. What is the best size rope for a standard kerf? 1/2" must have been too big.

Keeping wedges tight is important. Many people will put a tight wedge, and a medium/ long one loose enough to have some slant to it, barely in the kerf, which will show tipping faster than the tight wedge.

Loggers pull trees, when they are leaning out of bounds, like over a road, or power line. I wedge trees next to houses. The hinge does the steering, not the wedge or rope. A guy-line/ 90* retainer line is a different story.
