helps to hold a sharper angle/more accute. Better cutting. Difference can be seen in the ribbons for sure. Ever wonder why as you sharpen and the tooth gets shorter and shorter so does the ribbon? It was only a few yrs ago I reread a manual and it finally registered.

Something else I seem to always forget to do is to change/drop the file size as the tooth wears. That may contribute as well
