thanks! the problem with using a damper in the chimney is that the design relies on a strong draft to keep the airflow going in the right direction. if you damp the chimney you risk reversing the flow through the system. i have a plan in my head for another, larger unit that will do just that...

i really liked that design as well. i plan on making a larger unit (than the one im doing now) to heat water for my hot-tub. it will be similar.
