The single purpose of the craneball's keeping the cable taut enough to spool correctly without overlap. Aug's new crane's nowhere near big enough, nor has enough stick to warrant a 300 lb ball. It'd be overkill on such a small crane, and a pita for the climber to muscle around. Jomo

That's a sweet truck crane, almost identical to Atlas' inhouse crane that I worked with for many years. Don't abuse em and they'll pay for themselves many times over! The owners of Atlas are both millionaires! Aug deserves a badass crane. Jomo

It's so simple it's counter intuitive. You go up to the crane's maximum comfortable reach, and butt tie the tree to itself with nylon slings n shackles, while you're tied to the crane. When you make the release cut, the CO must boom yu up n outta dynamic thrashing range till things cool down...
