No treeman in my memory ever clanked louder as he walked away from a slain monster. Gerry Beranek made similar noise, I believe. Reg Coates does to this day. The rarest ones of our breed.

It's a good word! Expresses a lot in just a single word.

As you say, sir. My mistake. It seems my auto-spellcheck isn't all that good on indigenous words :). I'd bet you and I and maybe bare handful of others here know the word and what it means, don't you think :D.

Damn you, Kyle...every once in a while, I think maybe I'm getting pretty skookum on how to do stuff...and then you come along and blow my little aspirations dead in the water. :D

Oh, I understand well the benefits of big wood, my friend :). But big wood that is splitable is my goal, unlike that Aussie invasive species you whale away at :D. My antique 064 with Stihl full skip square ground 32 inch b&c makes fine 40ish inch rounds of clear oldgrowth Douglas fir that...

I'll tell you @davidwyby...I'm very glad I don't have to fight the battles you do just to make big pieces of firewood into usable sizes :D.

If you ask the length, all you know is what the seller tells you is the length. And at any length, or mix thereof, the seller is telling the truth...it's a face cord. But the buyer has no idea what the real volume is. It's an inherently ambiguous unit of measure. With a cord, the volume is...

Not too hard to figure out that it is an ambiguous measure, true :).

Also sorry...not my intention to shoot the messenger at all :). Appreciate the contribution to my knowledge, for true. It can be hard for me to understand a buyer being that uneducated on the subject...but of course, there are many subjects that I am clueless on as well. Buyer beware :D.

What is ambiguous about the single word "cord"? Since 3x16"= 48" and 48"=4 feet...why not just call it a cord? And if it was broken down into 6 inch lengths, 8 rows would still make a cord. This bush business, like the idea of face cords, is unnecessary complication of a simple definition.

So, what did you mean in this post? I'm with you on this John...any other unit of measure than cord or a mathematical subdivision thereof (like 1/2 cord) that one can apply to 128 cubic feet, has no definable basis.

And what is a "statute cord", pray tell?

    Bush cords?

I like big leaf maple, for around here. We all burn what we have access to, choosing the best from that lot, as conditions dictate :).

The most common native cherry here in western Oregon, Bitter Cherry, Prunus emarginata, is a fine fuel. It seldom gets very large. A diameter of 16 inches would be a pretty big one. It can be a hard wood to split, for both the stringiness that sometimes is present, but mostly because the bark...

Seems a ridiculous idea, that there is a generally specific number of pieces in a face cord. Just look at some of the pictures I've posted of my woodsheds...there is everything from cords made up of 1/8th rounds of 40 plus inch diameter old growth Douglas fir, to 2 to 5 inch diameter limb wood...
