    RIP D. Douglas Dent

I followed some rabbit down some rabbit hole to this old thread on the news of Doug Dent passing from a sudden stroke at the age of 66 or so. Ten years gone now. Brought back a load of memories of the man. Gods above, he could be a gold-plated SOB...but never ever was there a better big tree...

    Agreed.

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

    Thanks, Willard.

 I'm just about certain that vid was made here on the Mt. Hood NF. Where/how did you find it, Jameson?

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

And anything else, too...double-edged sword :D.

The FS Tree Climbers Guide will print out on 8.5"x11", and appears to be running about 100 pages total, so a duplex print will take about 50 pages...when we get the illustrations in it'll bulk up some. It'll be B&W, so printing a copy for a desk reference and to scribble on shouldn't be to...

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

While it's intended for use by US Forest Service instructors and climbers, it will be available as a downloadable pdf document to anyone with internet access...as is the current Tree Climbers Guide, as it is titled. But yes, this represents the approved methods, equipment specifications, and...

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

Yup, I and a few fellow technical advisory group authors/editors have been, and we're getting pretty close, all things being relative. Sure would help if funding the project didn't have to be mostly a backdoor operation, and time stolen from other work. Text is at 99%, and we're wrestling with...

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

Maybe this is a good point in the discussion to really encourage you to jump into the fire on a rework of your book, Jerry. Time has a disconcerting way of slipping by, doesn't it, and you have so much skill and wisdom to offer to those yet to come into this wonderful field of work, let alone...

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

Dent's videos were for some time overdue for being redone...changes in more up to date equipment and ppe, along with much better technology for making videos of superior quality, would have brought the still completely valid methods and principles forward in a better product. Now that will...

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

I see...well, thanks. But the FS will want an outside contractor with a track record...like the safety training company Dave and Greg and those guys have had running for a while. Or a published and recognized expert in the field, like Jerry. I have neither. Within the agency, I have no...

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

There's not a snowball's chance in hell. On the other hand, NiceGuyDave would have a real shot at getting some of that business, and Greg/klimbinfool. Jerry B., if he wanted to pursue it, would be a logical source for that type of training/certification.

I was wondering the same thing, Brian. I have no idea.

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

Oh, yes. He was scheduled to do C sawyer cert courses for the FS this spring.

Trips down memory lane...links to a couple of Dent training threads, if you're so inclined. Some of the newer members may not have seen them. https://www.masterblasterhome.com/showthread.php?6902-Felling-with-D-Douglas-Dent...

Best I can figure, no more than mid-sixties. I know he was about 23 when he wrote Procedural Approach, which was about 1974 if I have it right. Which in itself is amazing. He was always an impressive physical specimen, for a fairly small-statured man.

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

Y'all are very kind in your expressions of sympathy, but in truth it would be a stretch to say he and I were friends. A respected instructor for sure, one without whom I'd not have anything like the skills I do today. I know I had earned his respect, too...that is no small thing in how I view...

    RIP D. Douglas Dent

Wow...this thread is the first word I got on this sad event. I caught a bug somewhere and stayed in the house yesterday, went to bed early...still puny and just logged on a few minutes ago to a kind condolence via pm from Tucker/Chris, so I knew something bad had gone down. Right now I'm...
