A few here have constructed poles for BS from bamboo...would make me a smidge nervous on high shots, but what do I know. New sling is less than $30 USD from Sherrill catalog here...shipping probably sux though. If it would make it more reasonable I'd be willing to see about picking one up off...

No way would spur climbing have been my first choice on that bugger.

Kicking azz and taking names...that's our Fiona. I perceive goalie mentality in the lady..."come on at me sucka, you got nothin'". :D

Big dead pine has to go

I know there've been some times when luck was on my side; no matter how much I'd like to say I could claim responsibiity, a few times it's been pure blind good fortune that has sent me home unharmed.

On average, following your elbows and azzholes policy would save far more fallers from injury or worse, than standing around looking for a safe place to dodge to, I suspect.

I'm of the same opinion, and I agree that there is nothing wrong with having a second set of eyes...I just don't consider it safe to count on. And on at least one occasion I recall clearly, had I stayed to the pre-chosen escape path I'd have run right under a falling broken out rotten top...

Big dead pine has to go

 I'll tell you folks who think you can have a lookout shout a warning at you, and then that you will be able to visually locate the falling hazard, identify the proper escape path to use, and then move yourself out of the way of that hazard...don't bet on it. All that takes time, time you...

Are you sure it's been dead "some years"? Because it just doesn't look that way to me. Any way, the less time it's had to deteriorate, the less likely stuff is to break out...though I know you said it had hung up broken parts already, which may render this point moot.

Big dead pine has to go

Around here, a pine that still had that many fines on it would not have been dead so long that it wouldn't hinge adequately for a fell to the lean. That one has major limb weight, doesn't it!

Definitely watch out overhead. Climbing doesn't sound like the best choice, but who here looking at a picture can say better than you there looking at the tree?
