It for sure was not my bright idea...learned it somewhere, and used it a few times over the years. Digging the hole is not as much fun as all that, but otherwise, it's a gem.
It's pretty amazing how much pull a large-ish tire mounted on a rim can hold up to, completely buried standing upright, slightly leaning away from the direction of pull. Attach a chain to the center of the rim and in a narrow angled trench out to the surface a couple of yards away from the tire.
That picket arrangement can be hell-for-stout. I've built a couple, used heavy duty T posts...worked like a charm, 5 or 6 posts...just keep the back ties low and the anchor point at ground level.
