It's not a procedure just a word about replacement parts .If I can't find a specific part number I go right off the numbers from the component .A recent example being a Toro zero turn mower with a bad safety relay .This is designed to stop the engine if all the conditions are not met for...
I'll say this smart phones have changed the landscape .You can take a picture of a component ,blow it up to see the model number and find a replacement on the internet .A cell phone will fit in an area there's no way you can get your head into to see things .
Now copper tubing .For decades potable water lines ,those you drink from lead free solder is what you use .It goes on almost as good as 50/50 general use solder but the so called lead free flux doesn't work so well .Use acid acid flux like Kester or Oatey .
Acid flux also works on silver bearing...
The black pepper deal is also an oldie plus you can use ground grain like chicken feed and get about the same results .It's only a temporary fix .Water glass ,sodium silicate works some time on cast iron but not so good in a radiator .
Another old trick .Wobbled out threads in a hole .Use the ball out of a bearing and smack it with a hammer which will deform the first thread .It's a half-fast fix but it could get you by for a while .
The idea with the water in the carb is also old as the hills .The theory was the water turned to steam but you have to be carful and not just pour it in because if it doesn't vaporize it will lock it up because a liquid cannot be compressed .Bang, snaps a rod .Some early engines like John Deere...
There's all kinds of torch tips .Like burn rich, straight gas and carbonizing surface then lay the O2 and burn off .A crack in cast iron will show with the black that's left .Grind it out, drill a little hole in each end to stop the crack and stich weld it with nickel rod,3/4" at a time .Peen...
Okay back to stuck brake bleeders and rusted lines .Buy a set of line wrenches .metric and standard ,6 point .At the same time 6 point little combination wrenches ,6 point .Some of those bleeders are 1/4" an open end wrench will clean off the flats to the point only a pair of Vise grips will...
Here's another one older than the hills .Soldering a fitting on a leaky water line ,copper pipe .With a line full of water droplets you can heat it up until the chickens come home to roost and never get er done . Water turns to steam .Trick, pack the pipe full of bread which sucks up the water...
That holding the valve trick with compressed air goes back to my teenaged years which were some time ago .I did use a wad of rope once on an old Ferguson tractor that broke a valve retainer .How it kept from swallowing the valve I'll never know .I had to turn a new retainer because something...
I've made the spark plug adaptors several ways ,brazed/welded or taping the metal part of the plug and using threaded pipe bushings to fit the tapped hole to the grease zerts .I've got several in both M 14 and M 18 sizes as well as some fitted for air lines .
Another old trick is unsticking an engine with a grease gun . .Make an adapter for an engine from a spark plug and pump oil into the cylinder just make certain on a two cycle it's stuck above the ports .On a 4 cycle just make sure the valves are closed .The average grease gun puts out 5,000...
Brake bleeders can be a real chore .Older cylinders are cast iron and the bleeder is carbon steel .If you try to heat them you take a chance of ruining the cups or setting them on fire . Sometimes a good rap or two with a brass hammer will knock them loose after you give them a good soaking...
Never seeze is a mechanics best friend .It will only take one time of drilling out the socket head grade 8 bolts holding the knives in a brush chipper to prove my point .
