    Murphy's Step Cut

Well yes usually a maple if cut green and with an open enough face cut will hold clear to the ground .Even a bone dead one will hold long enough it won't flip flop on the way down before it breaks over .Now those old hundred year old hollow ones won't but they usually go where you aim them .Then...

    Murphy's Step Cut

I have no idea what a BPZ is but they do rot from the inside out .To tell the truth before the EAB thing the silver maple probabley provided the majority of the tree trimmers incomes locally . The fattest one I ever encountered I have a picture of in 1909-10 and about 10 years ago when it was...

I can see in a cirumstance like that leaving a fat hinge .I thought you were going to pinch the saw there for a moment though. Those soft maples were planted about the turn of the last century and they last about 100 years it seems before they go funky .Unusual to see a multiple to get that...

    Murphy's Step Cut

I suppose this example is just about typical of a conventional type fall except on the left coast with those Humbolt under cuts .It was a pull btw because of a little back lean .There's only about 1" of hinge and the back cut is an RCH higher than I usually do.That's a 30" plus ash about 75 feet...

    Murphy's Step Cut

So after all this is this patented Murf cut for a back leaner then? If it's just for pull type thing a simple old back cut and fall would work just as well I'd think .Leaves a neater looking stump too if that matters .Of course if you mow them off at the ground I don't suppose it makes much...

    Murphy's Step Cut

Actually I do but those old Bashlins haven't been used in over 20 years .The pads are shot . Maybe 4-5 years ago I hooked a 25 foot spar just to see if I could still do it .Nor bad I was only stiff and sore about a day over that deal .

    Murphy's Step Cut

Well now just by the law of physics with that low cut and break over it will kick the butt end out ,can't happen any other way . Now like with a bent over tree that gets smashed from another take down it will barber out but usually pinchs the saw .That low cut still bothers me about tossing the...

    Murphy's Step Cut

You're confusing me here Stigster .If the thing stood up all by itstelf with a back lean before you wittled on it why would it tear out the roots no matter how you cut it . I'm not questioning your knowledge because you've tripped thousands compaired to my hundreds .It's just most people who...
