A piston from a Briggs and Stratton or a beer keg tapper handle works well too if you're talking early old school American hot rodding . I imagine 350 Chevy engines will live on for the next 50 years or so in one form or another .
The Ford 8BA flatheads are at least that old and still can be...
Here is something else to ponder .Most older engines were set for 2.5-3.5 thou clearence on the mains/rods and ran 10w-30 oil . If somebody decided to regrind a precision fit for about a thou clearence like these newer engines ,not good .That is so tight you have to run 5w -20 or you won't pump...
After thought .If that thing had a cast crank another thing could have happened .If they spun the crank in the wrong direction while grinding it will cause the fibers to form burrs .So small you can't see them .These little microscopic things will eat right through the babbit in the bearing...
A lot of thngs could have happened ,like a plugged oil galley . Usually if a small block throws a rod it will snap the cam and usually break the bottom out of the cylinder where that failure occurs but not every time .
Did it toss a rod bearing or spin it ?
Tanking the block should assure all...
I just caught this myself .Don't feel pregnant ,it happened to me once on a four bolt 350 . I had failed to finish torquing one of the rods . Since that happened I have always marked them with a felt pen .
Chit happens ,lick your wounds and go on . People that don't screw up are the ones that...
It may sound odd but what tears most trannies up are soft shifts especially on high horsepower applications . They made them shift soft for the comfort of the users . A harsh bang into the next gear is actually all a shift kit does for them .
Around here what tore up the t-350's was rocking to...
I've done several trannys, the mechanical kind in auto's ,not he-shes . I have reasonably good luck but this damned A4Ld Ford in my Ranger has given me fits .Chevy t-350's are relatively simple and the parts are reasonably inexpensive as compaired to some .
Now regarding the other type, had I...
Yep ,a Welch plug is called a freeze plug by some although they often don't pop out if the blocks freezes .
The reason they use plugs is so they can shake out the casting sand from inside the block ,head whatever .
Ah too bad you aren't closer because I have a set of 2.02 heads .Although I'm...
So what, turn the crank ??? A word of advice, while you have the engine out go ahead and replace the Welch plugs .Old engines it's not a fact of if they rust through, rather when .
A 4 bolt 350 is a good old engine .:D
