    Mentoring New Climbers

Nice job Chris, I think teaching new tree workers is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. I like to get new climbers started with ornamental work, with mostly handsaws and pruners. I think it takes a solid year of chainsaw experience on the ground or in a bucket, before they are good...

Will this work for my top anchor?

Why not just climb the anchor tree and set your block. Seems like it’s worth it for peace of mind and a simple setup. Keep it simple.

I've never used or seen someone use a chainsaw lanyard in a bucket truck.

Time for a chipper upgrade, what's your preference?

We have had great luck with the Bandit 1590s and 18xps, which are the same chipper they just changed models #s. They are just under 10k pounds, and can chip 20 inch stuff. We have always gone with the John Deere engines, as they have worked great for us.

What 5/8” rigging rope are you using?

I'm using sterling ropes 1/2, and 5/8. Always used to use stable braid, but I like the sterling better!

    Do the best you can?

I would have cut that limb back to the trunk. It’s unlikely that the stub will sprout growth with strong branch unions, so I would think a cut back to the trunk would be a better choice

    Insurance coverage assessment

Every time I call my non working business partner (my insurance company), about anything, it seems that it costs me money. Dealing with insurance seems like the worst part of business, but I'm glad we have good coverage ( I hope it is)

What's Your Favorite Saw You Own?

I really like the stihl 462, good power with a 20 inch bar. It also seems really lite when you go back to running 461.

    201 oil caps

I buy the Chinese knock offs on ebay. $3-$4 a cap. They seem to last as long as stock ones.

    Oregon 91VXL

I don't like it very much. Its so grabby, really bad on the last pruning cut at the trunk. When you get into any wood with strong grain or at all twisted, this chain is not good.

Is this Tree Safe to Fall -- Away from the Power Lines?

Robert, I agree with Willie on this one. The last time you worked near power lines you "helped your friend by ripping down the wires". I think you need to practice much more, before you take on trees near targets again. Your cuts are improving, but an old timer told me this saying about...
