    Buddy's Outdoor Thread/pictures

I went on a hike today and took a bunch of pictures. I will post a few right now and some later. In the center of the first picture is a doug fir tree, just to the left of the top of the tree you can barely make out 2 tan colored spots. Those are the elk in the other 2 pictures. The first is...

    Treestuff gift certificate

If anyone purchases anything from treestuff don?t forget to add the free gift certificate to your cart. I bought almost $900 worth of stuff yesterday afternoon and didn?t see that offer and when I called and asked about it this morning they said I was to late. It would have been a $100 gift...

    Triple hinge sizwheel fail

I had a heavy leaning doug fir that I tried the triple hinge on. It failed miserably but I blame the frozen tree, rotten center and the more than average heavy lean. I had a line tied in it to but the tree didn't move very far before I got slack in the line and that was all she wrote, right...

What caused this defect in the ponderosa?

As you can see in the pictures almost every large limb on this pine had a dead strip on the top of it for about 24" out from the trunk. My guess is that there is a high probability that this tree is rotten in the center but I don't know for sure. I had to take the dead top out of it today...

Tree top sealing, is it necessary?

I wasn't sure how to title this thread. I have to remove a dead top from a ponderosa pine today and I was curious if there is anything I could cover it with or seal it with that would help prevent any future rot? Or maybe it will pitch out and seal itself.

    The Water Bottle Challenge

I want to challenge you guys to place a water bottle on something or near something that you don't want to hit when falling or topping a tree. Post up some pictures of the aftermath. You can even set a bottle out where you think a tree is going to top out. I'm not real picky on how you do it...

    Trail clearing

I spent yesterday out in the mountains clearing some trail. It was suppose to be a 2 day trip but I returned home late last night. I left the pickup yesterday morning at 8am. It's a 2 hours drive from the house and while I would have liked to have gotten an earlier start I didn't feel like...

I have a confession to make...

So, I have started my own tree service business. It's a legitimate business, registered with the state and I also have insurance. It's only a 3 day a week job because I work for the Idaho Dept of Lands the other 4. Most of my jobs have been pine removals so far with one cottonwood that the...

    Flop or top?

The motel owner in town wants me to remove a spruce tree that sits in the parking lot. This working around asphalt driveways and parking lots makes me nervous because I haven't worked around it enough to know what it will handle. I will provide some pictures if you guys wouldn't mind providing...

How do paved driveways tolerated falling trees?

Of the thousands of trees I have fallen I can't ever recall falling any of them on pavement. I have a few to fall on and across a driveway and I'm wondering if I need to take any precautions?

    Inside an old trim job

These blocks of wood showed up at work one day and I couldn't figure out why someone would have found them significant enough to bring in. I took a quick glance and noticed the limbs had been painted, so what, big deal... Fast forward through winter and someone pointed out that it was a tree...

Dead limb removal from doug fir

I have a doug fir just outside the front door of the house and the thing is constantly losing dead limbs. If it wasn't for the shade that it provides in the summer time I would probably just remove the whole thing. My only worry about removing the dead limbs is that it would look uneven when I...

    Do you measure tree height?

I was just curious if you guys ever measure tree height before you have to fall one in a tight spot? At work when we cruise timber we have to measure tree height. We use 2 different tools, a clinometer and a range finder, (it does the math for you).

    Boredom=organization

Haven't been doing much lately so I have had time to do some cleanup. I added a new shelf to the saw cabinet and put some hangers inside the doors to hold chains and bars. I also took a half dozen bars into town to have them railed. I haven't been this organized in... well never.
