I wonder if thin rounds would be easier. In they are thin and partially cut, a blow from a hammer might shear/split the round in half. Ripping takes a lot of times. Definitely a job for a respirator.

Correct, red oak is heavy when alive. I think I can get to the 4" diameter branches with a decent rope angle. There are enough targets that smaller is better.
