... chainsaw at the transfer station, this time a Stihl 018 in great shape ... needs a bar, chain, side cover and retention nut, and an idle adjust. Two climb saws thrown away by others.

Both times the saws were placed on the metal pile ... probably garage or barn clean out, technically we are not suppossed to pick the metal pile

Anybody who didn't see those saws on the "metal pile" needs to be shot, orrrrrrr at least see an optometrist.

They just toss them if they don't run .Most people have no idea how to repair them .

They might tote them off to a repair shop then get sticker shock when they get informed the price to fix cost more than the saw is worth so out they go .

I haven't either .Other people find them and give them to me .

Actually somebody gave Tom an 019 complete ,running .It's in my shed and evidently after running it hard for 20 minutes he claims it quits .I haven't had time to fool with it .He's got maybe half a dozen 020's and 200's and has little use for the saw anyway .

Before recycling became big, saws at the dump was a common occurrence, and my friend works there. :) He gave me a couple, but his shed still looks like a candy store. Saws and weed whackers are mostly what I focus on when over at his place, but his wife complains about the two car garage with no longer any room for the cars, let alone another bicycle. Varying states of condition for the saws, from disintegrating to wtf!!!
Awhile sitting in the dump will make even a former good condition saw when tossed, look like you might only want to poke it with a stick.

This 028, before and after, was a dump special. I wouldn't have bothered except that it had a handle heater. I use it a lot in the winter, and it runs good now. Have to admit, a pretty long project, and for awhile a stinky one..

Well you gave it a new lease on life, good .

I've got one in the shed .Runs okay but it's a tad anemic .It's one on the list for a little pep up when I find the time .

In the way of modding it, Al, I just took out the base gasket, and let the timing be as it will. Runs stronger than when stock. P and c were in surprisingly good shape. Carb works too, though it looked real bad. Some fungus was eating it. :|:

Well yes if you just drop the cylinder and do nothing else they get a whole different attitude .

You actually have changed the port parameters although you haven't changed the relationship of timing within those parameters .By dropping the cylinder in relationship to the crankshaft you effectively have advanced the intake port opening and retarded the exhaust opening .It won't run any faster but will have more grunt .

I get a hoot out of reading some of the posts on other forums where they make such a big deal of increasing the power output of a chainsaw .How only a select few can really do same and blah, blah ,blah .

If they only knew how easy it is to do a little pep up and weren't so anal about it I'd bet the attitude would change rather quickly .No matter it's amusing to read about it .:)

I stand corrected on the timing. Those series of saws, probably like your 038, they become real good torquers by the lowered cylinder. Mind the squish and you are in good shape. The increased torque suits them, I believe. Makes for some noise though with an open can.

Now on that I have to start being more mindfull than I have been in the past by using ear plugs .I was off last week running several real loud saws and as a result I got some ring to one ear which is lessening daily .Wake up call .

Ear damage is not only progressive, it can occur quite quickly. I have a little hissing thing going on, and am being much more careful now. Hope it abates.
