One more question. We have two pear trees, a shinseki and a comice. The asian was healthy and the fruit was really sweet. It's about 12' away from the comice, which looks like this:
I know that he dusted them with sulphur in the spring at least three or four times. He also sprayed them with a ;fungicide at least twice, and a dormant spray of oil and copper. I'll ask him, he's 85 now and probably doesn't remember, but maybe.
I agree with Steve, most people have no idea whats involved in keeping good fruit. You could try bagging your apples but I bet in Portland you need to rebag often
