Both nylon or polyester, I think what most synthetic lifting slings are made from, degrade from exposure to UV. That one that broke sure looked sun beaten faded. Store them out of the sun when not in use at job sites wherever.
Crane operator must not be that cushy, a lot of them complain about having neck pain. Probably the unnatural position combined with the high level of concentration, particularly in tree work.
