Famers often string a twisted shiny metallic tape over their crops. The birds seem to get used to it and it doesn't phase them after awhile. Poison tipped blowgun...just have to remember not to inhale. I did read where it said that fake owls are effective, as long as you move them every week...

There is something available that can shoot things like pellets, but I don't know the power or the range. Probably just some plastic pellets or something. They are very paranoid of guns here. Ever since somebody said, "Enough of this crap", and stabbed a politician, getting potential weapons...

Walked out to my plot behind my shop and saw two partially eaten tomatoes on the ground. Crows! I had heard that they will eat them, but I don't believe I have ever had one touched before. Must be a troublemaker in the area. It is frustrating to have that happen. I can't get a gun, so I'm...

Man, lettuce is a no go this year to a large extent. Something is eating the seedlings, they just disappear with no sign of what is chomping them. I see some big bites out of some other vegee leaves too. :\:

Stig, I have seen ground cover being sold, and lots of folks use it, the kind that you punch holes in, and some may already have spaced cutouts. I'm not sure I have ever seen the type that water will go through, that seems like the ticket! A neighbor once cautioned me about using a petroleum...

I got a hankering to make my own fish emulsion fertilizer, there is mention of doing it on the web. I can't find fish emulsion being sold here....odd for such a fishy country. Home made is supposedly better too. The markets all gave me the cold shoulder about getting guts and unsold fish, said...

Is anyone else making aerated compost tea this year? Kind of a little hobby of mine with great results. I'm going to make my own fish fertilizer too, but I hear it is pretty stinky. I picked up a nice fish at the market to chop up today.

Weeding is about the only thing I hate about gardening. I have to get all the bastids.

I guess if it is a vegetable garden, herbicides are out. Not many options left, it seems. Some folks suggest moving.

Magnus, I bet tobacco would love aerated compost tea sprayed on it, with the big leaf surfaces. That is some incredible stuff for plants.

Can you import seeds? Isn't there an agricultural product restriction?

My beans poked their heads up. The lettuce seems to be still contrary so far. Corn is starting to poke through, a relief because I thought I might have planted too deep. I'm kind of a by the seat of my pants vegetable grower. I just buy my seeds locally at the garden supply places, checking...

Over three days planted corn, carrots, and some different types of peas and beans. A good friend says I can share some of his land for my garden, close by, so i have expanded a bit beyond my small plot behind my shop. It's a nice big piece of land with a good view off into the distance. A...

Do any of you guys put lime on your gardens a few months before planting, it doesn't take much. I think that wood ashes will work to a similar extent to increase alkalinity. Pretty standard practice in these parts. Possibly depends on the soil in the region?

I have made manure tea, but I think you get more bang for your buck with a blend of various compost and additives, including manure. My current blend is compost with manure in it, fish emulsion, epsom salts, and some backstrap molasses. Aerate brew 2-3 days and get some magic stuff for spray...

I like the raised beds, they look like paintings with dirt, quite artistic. Raised beds or whatever, do try the aerated compost tea that I gabbed about more than enough last year. It is wonderful.
