The better kimchi has fermenting squid in it, which has a rather pervasive smell.
I have some Korean friends, and they HAVE to have it every day....it just sits on the table permananetly. The whole house has the aroma.
They don't have skunks on the island here, so I've tried to describe the smell to people. The closest I can come up with is, "Like old tires burning". Better description?
