He's not that picky, and he's way too busy to make himself available while I trim it. As long as it looks like something's been done to keep the tree "in check" he'll be happy, but it needs to be visible. Definitely a good time for before / after photos. I've been climbing SRT exclusively...

I had not considered a lift for this job, the cost of a self propelled is definitely a deterrent, but a tow behind might work. I'm just not sure on the height. The 2 nearest rentals have a 45 and 50 ft tow behind, which along with an extendable pole pruner and an extendable pole saw (with an...

Thank you for taking the time to diagram that for me. I was looking at cutting back more than that, I will try to stick more to what you have outlined. I met with the client today, plan for the first 2 are as mentioned - 1.Trim to clear house and wires, then balance a bit 2. trim to previous...

Thank you for the explanation. You sure get further out on teeny tiny limbs that I am usually comfortable with, hopefully that'll improve with more experience.

2 was previously trimmed, I don't think 3 and 4 have had anything preventative done to them. 3 had some lower branches removed for clearance, it used to have a slightly larger maple next to it that was starting to die, I removed that one last january.

The lower right, toward the old farm equip? Do you mean cut it back to reduce the weight on it to prevent it splitting away from the main trunk? Or cut it back to the main trunk?

Thanks for the assessment, Mick, and for the comment and link, Sean. They may be small in the grand scheme, but for maples in my area they are substantial, especially the last one. It looks smaller in the pic than it does in person. The whole job is client requested, and as much as I hate to...

This maple out front needs to be reduced and clear the house and wires. I'm not sure what this one is, needs to be reduced, clear the house and the walkway. Maple out behind the barn, canopy reduction Last but certainly not least, this beast at the end of the driveway needs a reduction...

I'm still not sure if its going to be winter or spring. I have about a week yet to make up my mind. I'm kinda leaning toward spring, I can't imagine someone seeing sap icicles in their tree and thinking their tree guy did the right thing.

I'm most likely not looking at a proper pollard (even if I knew the difference between a proper one an improper one), one of the maples is very large, the other 2 are not as large, but still fairly substantial. I think if I were to cut them back to what I think is a pollard (which looks to be a...

What makes them terrible pollard candidates? Is it the way they grow back after doing so?

Winter is when they are tapped for making syrup, so I would ASSume that it runs more in mid winter, but you know how THAT goes.

This is probably a dumb question, but I feel not asking would be even dumber. . Is it too late to prune maples? I've been trying to get together with my client for about a month now, and we are meeting next tuesday (jan 19th). Assuming he approves my estimate, I'd like to do the job later in...
