Lol, smoke is normal wear and tear I think. Just kidding, I've only melted 1/2" once, and now I mostly use 5/8"s for blocking down and 1/2" only for smaller stuff. I'm guessing from some of the pics you've posted you've seen a failure or two!

It is exciting if things get nuts, as long as you live to tell about it. I was always good at staying clear. And I concur, it's a normal part of logging, but not really acceptable in residential work.
