I had a buddy in high school who had a trained falcon. It was super cool, had it land on my hand(with the leather gauntlet on of course) once.

I honestly could give a crap about a gophers suffering. I didn't want any raptors to eat any though.

I also kept a pretty close eye on them the whole time as when they got poisoned they'd get kind of dopey often before they'd die and I'd just shoot them, put them out of their misery.

A very real concern. Most died underground but daily I'd walk the killing fields and dispose of any topside bodies so less chance of scavengers getting them. They were all in one corner of one pasture at my place so pretty easy to keep an eye on.
