I think part of the confusion here is that an llc can be set up many ways, mine is taxed as an S Corp, here's some info on that for those interested

First off you don't pay self employment tax which can be ridiculous, another benefit, You can elect to be taxed as an s Corp and not be double taxed like you would in a c Corp.
I used Sage international. 9 years ago I spent $7- 800 and got my articles, share certificates, seal etc. Full meal deal and haven't regretted it a bit
I'd just pay a pro to do it. It's not a do it once and leave it thing, you need to do your minutes annually or the protection isn't really there. Definitely worth doing imo
