I had a chance to dig through a bunch of old tech bulletins on the 048 and made some notes for you:
S/N 112801305 and above has an uprated engine.
Port timing was changed and a Walbro WS 25 carb with a larger bore was installed, in place of a WS 14.

Well Burnham, I checked and both those numbers are NLA from STIHL. But you might find it in stock at a dealer.
But I checked with a dealer friend in NY who has tons of old parts and he has the plastic insert piece for the cover, but not the spike. He has the inboard spike but not the outboard...
Here is a pic of the cover, the bucking spike #11 is part number 1117 664 0502 and the long plastic guard #15 is part number 1117 656 1500.
I wish I could explain for sure why a saw that sat that long doesn't need new carb diaphragms and a total cleaning, when I see stuff today that will be...

The 042, 048 is series 1117 and was made from 1976 to 1985. This saw has a reputation for shaking a lot, as in bolts coming loose and such.
