What's an acceptable amount of honey/brood comb to get through the winter in a Langstroth hive? 2 deeps?

Good luck with it Brendon. It's a good time to buy, although the banks are being pretty stingy with their loans. Getting pre-qualified is a good idea because it lets you know right up what your price range is.

Thanks, only the best for my bees. Steve, this hive was trapped out of the floor of a house by sealing a wire mesh cone over the hole they were going in and out of, essentially creating a one way door that they could go out of but not get back in. I put my hive right next to the cone with some...

Hey Butch, any chance of enabling pdf attachments on the forum? A couple people have already asked me for the hive plans and it'd be nice if I could just post them up for anyone who wants them. Here's some pictures of my homemade ghetto hive. It's made from a 1"x10"x16' board along with...

John, PM me your email and I'll send you plans for the one I make. I've looked at a number of different designs and I think it's the easiest one. I'll also get some pictures up here soon, like I keep saying. The length of the hive depends on the other dimensions. There's got to be enough...

The best way to handle the combs is to turn them on their long axis so that the top bar is facing straight up and down. Then you can just spin it around to see both sides. Or you can just support the bottom of the comb with your fingers. Yes, it's all cut comb with top bars. It's not really...

Yup, only one hive. If I can't buy a queen lickety split I'm just going to give up on them for this year and give these bees to a friend to combine with some of his hives. Bummer dude. :(

I don't know what caused it, and I'm pretty sure she's not hiding. I searched high and low for her. And there's no eggs or young larvae either, basically no brood at all. Not good.

The queen in my hive has disappeared. I have no idea what happened to her, but they are now queenless. I've got a call into a local queen breeder and have my fingers crossed. It's getting pretty late in the season for setbacks like this. I'm going to start feeding them today. It's been a...

I have a friend that does that Steve, and makes a decent bit of money at it too. Moving hives is really, really not fun though, and can be pretty hard on the bees. I think my hives will stay in one spot. It's not a business for me. Just a way to get a little honey and beeswax to spread...

Perhaps the wire fence was electric Justin? Around here electric fences are sometimes necessary to keep the bears at bay. Once they get a taste for bees they're hard to stop.

Not yet, but will be shortly. They need to pack it in to prepare for winter. Many people complaining about poor honey production over here this year as well. Hopefully next year we'll both be harvesting instead of feeding.

Honeybees can be remarkably docile, if you know how to work with them. Each hive has a little bit of a different personality. You wouldn't find me scooping bees all over myself, though.

Wow, late swarms in your area. Although I guess you probably have a longer bee season than I do.
