Thanks Brendon, wingnuts were exactly what I was thinking but couldn't figure out how to keep the bolt from falling out when I took them off. That second nut is the ticket.

The whole truck bed is kinda tiny... I knew when I bought it that the smaller bed was going to be an annoyance, but it was just too good of a deal to pass up. For what it's worth that box will easily hold a couple chainsaws, plus climbing gear, so it'll do what I need it to for now.

I really wanted a crossbed box, but finding one that will fit a stepside Ranger is just too difficult. I checked Lowes, Home Despot, and all the truck accessory shops. It would have to be special ordered. I ended up getting a chest box instead, which actually has more capacity. I'm going to...

Well, shoots, I gotta go find a Lowes! Thanks for the tip Skwerl.

I really don't like tonneau covers. I really wanted a crossbed box, but it looks like I can way better deal on a chest style box. Is that what you see at Lowes, Brian?

Finding a used toolbox for a stepdside Ranger is easier said than done! And new ones are bucks. :(

Yes, I can see how this could quickly turn into an expensive series of projects.

I have an unrelated question I'll throw in here. The previous owner of this Ranger put oversized tires on it. I don't know exactly how speedometers function, but I'm guessing that these larger tires will cause some inaccuracy in the speedometers readout, probably slower than actual speed. Am...

Well, after half an hour searching Ford Ranger forums I'm going to scrap the cold air intake idea. The general consensus seemed to be that the Ranger stock intake already sucks in more cool air than the engine needs. The aftermarket cold air intake kits don't do much more than increase engine...

The K&N website claims that the cold air intake kit they make for my truck can go as long as 100,000 miles without cleaning, depending on driving conditions. That seems a bit far fetched, and I know that I will be driving on dirt roads so I'd expect to be cleaning it quite a bit more than that...

Andy, please educate me about cold air intake and catback exhausts. Are these worth doing for my Ranger? The exhaust is probably beyond what I'm able to work on myself, but the air intake seems doable. Any particular brands that would be recommended?

Yes, a toolbox will definitely be a necessity. I'll be checking craig's list to see if I can find a used one nearby. I'm not entirely sure about the palm tree, but I think the frond bases just naturally fell off of that part.

:D:D:D New truck! 1999 Ford Ranger, 81,300 miles, 3.0L V6, big tires (brand new), 4x4, tow package, bedliner, tinted windows, souped up stereo with 4 nice mids and a sub. Yes, the stepside bed ain't so great but I can overlook that. I bought it from a Marine helicopter mechanic who has kept...

Brian, I had a '94 Mazda B2300, which is a Ranger clone. I also loaded the heck out of mine and was impressed at how well it handled it, although the little 4 cylinder struggled a bit. I'm actually going to look at a '99 Ranger in a couple hours.

Thanks Burnham, I talked to a buddy who gave me similar feedback. He also said that they are very easy to overload.
