You can definitely turn them off/on as needed and they definitely get 'hot' if you accidentally bump the hh switch in July. I have a 346xpg in parts after an untimely fall from a tree (the saw, not me) a few years ago... I'm toying with retrofitting the hh's to another saw.

I have never regretted getting the heated handles... and I am a good bit south of you...
