    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

Hahaha...Deliverance, I guess. I roller skated once with the banjo playing albino in Deliverance. Some of us happened to go to the local Mountain City roller rink (long story) and, dang, if that ole boy wasn't there.

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

Paul hit it right on the head...this an AVOCATION for me...I do like the work, hard though it certainly is, and like "actually taking time to consider the possibilities and more so learn from it AND be interested by it." I kind of relish not having to just "git er done" and learning as I go...

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

Hahaha...yeah, your earlier reference to hypoxylon and Blinky's bouncing bones (37' as I recall) was one of the hints and intimations that I factored into my spidey sense early warning system. Thanks for the stages of deterioration...I will research Ursula Andress and Kournikova in great...

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

Thanks, Greg...it may drive some people nutz but it's all good...I sometimes wonder about posting too many picts but different folks focus in on different things so I just post away. When Butch says "ENOUGH ALREADY", then I'll back off a bit. Here's to your spidey sense:

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

Your are right, there was not extensive rot..I'll see if I can cut some cookies. I left the wood in 30" sticks for them to haul off...I'll see if I can still access it. Did you see any tan dusty patches? No dusty patches re deadwooding the other trees, is the mgt just going to wait for them...

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

OK, here's the drill. At first look from a distance, tree is definitely dead. 2nd look up close see black canker patches, bark sloughing off, hollow sound (was caused by area between bark and cambium), anecdotal reports of drainage issues and installation of culvert pipe in last 4-5 years...

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

Thanks...I am glad it is down, too. It's nice to show a decent hinge...and even nicer to have the pieces go where you want them to.

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

One of the first limbs to be cut needed to stay close to the tree...a spear cut did that fine. My plan was to move the pull line up the trunk pretty high to have some insurance that the top didn't try to go towards the high tension wires. I learned today not to run the end of the line thru a...

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

It's done and down...Brian, you can ease back now, I won't drag it out any longer...or will I? :/: I got the OK to do the deed today at 5:00 when they closed for the day...started loading up the truck about 3:00, sharpening saws, gas/oil, etc...on site about 4:45. I excavated some roots and...

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

?Leaves last year?...don't know. I haven't gotten a clear answer yet about how long ago they noticed it was dead...probably just this year. When I finally got them to start looking up into the trees with the intention of seeing things they realized they had some problems. Thanks for the...

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

hahaha...no way...it'll be more fun to draw this out another week or so and drive you totally nutz!!! Ideally, I get to dropz it on Tuesday...I'll try not to drag out this torture too long. :P Hey, Wiley...can't go backwards...wires there too.

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

Got it on the guying. I have done that before, too. I plan to dig around the base/roots some to see how they are doing...that will help decide a course of action, also.

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

You and Wiley may be onto something...I am leaning towards doing it this way. Setting a spar pull rope on the way up is a good idea that I had not considered either...thanks. And that last idea "trick somebody else into cleaning up." -- got that one covered already. :D

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

I knew that would raise some eyebrows...:D...that was a Katrina tree that the owner said they wanted taken down. I said we would just take out the broken stuff and dangerous stuff, didn't want to take a lot of time there. It evolved into a takedown once we got into it. Re: all those...

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

Wiley, thanks for the reminder on that one. I have not done it yet but remember reading about it...in Jerry's book, I think. It's a trick to remember. Brian, you have a realistic plan, for sure. I am glad to have folks brainstorm, though, to see what I haven't thought of yet. Y'all be doing...

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

I understand...dreaming is cool...even fun trying to implement sometimes. I appreciate folks taking the time to think it out. I'll try to keep it simple...I have been known to get a bit involved before :|:

    "Swimming hole" tree - canker/rust/scale/blight?

This tree is as tall as any nearby trees so a high block might not be secure enough...also, I don't want to cause any damage to any nearby tree by leading a top or large piece into the support tree. Idea #2, though is a possibility...that would help keep the top close. The big factor will be...
