John, you are GOOD...I just looked it up and the size looks great...what is really neat about it is that I have been wanting to know for about 2 years what one is. I discovered a tree in the woods between my house and my son's house with a very distinctive bark...very deep bark segments, much...

Heck, naw...he saw some of y'all's madness about what a wack tree it is in the printouts I showed him...I hope he will get an Acer griseum, Paperbark maple. I plan to plant one for my grandson soon.

The power lines were across the street...my guesstimate showed that the top few feet of the tree would have brushed the lines...plus blocked the street for awhile. I might have been able to fall it at an angle but would still have blacked the street some. So, I decided that topping it would...

You just be REAL sure to closely read what you give them...some of the funny comments we get here might not read so funny to the perpetrator/victim/customer.

He will probably do the replant...we walked his little patch of woods for a possible candidate but he is going to have to buy something...he had some scrubby willow oaks and sweetgums mostly. I am thinking maybe this (below) or a rosebud: Paperbark Maple Acer griseum Orange-red fall color...

The pictures say it all...a takedown it was. I printed out pertinent pages from this thread and let the owner read what such a highly educated, highly qualified group thought about topping the tree (I did leave out the page where Stumper called him a kook for the metal cap idea :P) He was...

I'm not crazy about it, Guy, but the owner thinks it is the wrong tree for the site...it is WAY taller than he wants that close to the house....he feels it "overpowers" the house. I strongly encouraged him to remove and replace but he wants to "try this" to see how he likes it.

Hmmmm...I think he will eventually replace the tree. I'll be curious to see how it does. A redbud would be a good choice...or one or three of our deep South dogwoods, maybe.

No...here is a picture...his front porch takes a very long time to dry out after rain...and he seldom uses the front door and moisture builds up between the storm door and front door and may cause rot he thinks. He hopes more sun will help. I think the porch floor wood just needs a good...

I visited tree after work today...it is a maple of some sort. The verdict is to top and see how she does. We discussed tree wound dressing, metal caps and banding around the stem to prevent spitting...these were the owner's ideas; I dissuaded him about this and we'll just let Nature do its...

Hey, Stumper, I have seen a metal cap here or there but never really considered it a realistic solution to a problem. Yep, Brian, I'm thinking that if he doesn't want to R&R the tree that I'll just do what he wants...he is going to get it done anyway, I feel pretty certain.

I did a job for a lady last weekend that generated a referral from her co-worker. This fellow wants me to "top" this tree at the line I drew...there is a natural gap there. I am still trying to find out the type of tree...I verified it is not a sweetgum, only have a picture so far...he is to...
