Well, it all comes down to money. More oil means less wear, but oil costs money. It also pollutes to some extent. There's a sweet spot in there somewhere that maximizes value. No idea where that spot is, but it would be interesting to know. If a big manufacturer sponsored a logging crew to try...

Do you need all the oil? Maybe try dialing it back a little. My Stihls are all stingy with oil, but I don't have a 500I. Maybe they improved the oiler on the 500, or you got a rogue unit that oils nicely.

I start getting concerned when the metal starts pinging. No idea how hot that is, but I don't like that sound.

Depends on how interested one is in doing work themselves. Also, it's helpful having a good dealer to go to in a pinch. Doesn't matter as much for me, but if I were running a business, I'd want a good relationship with a dealer I can go to in-person.

On the Stihl round filters, I grease the gasket fitting. Seems to help keep fines out of the carb.

Banging it on the side of the truck, blowing with my mouth, and/or brushing with a soft toothbrush depending on exact filter design. No point in getting it perfectly clean, cause it'll start clogging when it gets used anyway. Good enough is good enough.

I'm not sure it would objectively be the best decision to conserve maximum amount of money, but if you think you'll get more enjoyment out of it, it might be worth the added expense. You spend a lot of time at work. Might as well make it the best experience you can.

I can't find it now, but Stihl makes a device to monitor power equipment. I think it's geared towards fleet use to monitor stock. It's small, and looks like a tachometer, and I'm guessing works in a similar way through induction. I wish I could remember what it's called.

I kind of like just collecting a check. I work for a very small company, have seen the hardships, and wouldn't want to do it for myself. Working for myself, I wouldn't want to go beyond under the table, side money kind stuff. As soon as it turns "official", especially with a few employees, it...

I have a plastic 1qt bottle like that Mudpro. Got it years ago for a camp stove, and it's somewhat of a collectors item now. For bar oil I have a ~1qt metal drinking bottle I got from the thrift shop. I used to use a gear oil bottle, but I repourposed that for my mill.

That I don't know. I've read something to that effect in the past, and it's been my experience with field equipment over the years. edit: Some further thoughts... I'm a little embarrassed that I don't know fundsmental ways in which the world works, but I think the color issue has something to...

I have an emotional attachment to metal cans, but plastic has served me better aside from the various terribad epa attachments. I keep them out of sunlight, and the ones in back of my truck are bagged.

I've been super happy with my No-Spill™ gas cans. I'll say they work better than traditional cans. Pour fast, and can be stopped immediately. Well worth the $16 I spent.
