When the synthetics come on the scene the first obvious problem was fusing / melting, getting locked up on the line. WTF?
Understand, in the spirit of competition we use to race to the ground. Smoking the ropes, quite literally, which wasn't a problem with manila.
So, to solve that...
Nice vid. Thanks.
I really love the line control that a friction hitch provides.
Even half inch manila rope set against itself with a taught line hitch. the friction during a descent can be dialed in precisely by how you set the knot first, and second how you squeeze it and allow tension...
Funny, I was thinking the same thing.
I never used single line in work trees, take downs, wreck jobs. Always double line there, and in the latter years using a prussic and minding pulley for tending. the line. Big step up from the ol' taut-line hitch.
In the tall trees it was single line...
Birds of feather. Been there done that. Fact, I had it bad.
Obsessive compulsive disorder.
Find solutions to common problems or issues, finding better ways to do something through invention. At any cost.
From early on (1970s) I began fabricating a whole line of designs in climbing...
I admire your enthusiasm and pursuit. Really I do.
I'm an old school arborist from the late1960s. U.SA. and proud of it. I swear to God. I started climbing using natural fiber ropes. That was the thing. That's all there was.
Synthetics were just entering the arborist realm in the early...
I swear, you all have lost your minds.
Damn taught line hitch is all any climber needs.
Friction is friction for crying out loud. Don't over complicate the simple things.
Variations of the basic prussic knot. There must be a thousand variations.
Especially with all the combinations of cordage today.
Bottom line is, to me anyway, what's the most practical and easy to tie.
old schooler
Can you tie it one-handed?
I started climbing on the taught-line hitch.
Believe me the taught-hitch has its drawbacks but one of it virtues is you could tie that one-handed.
Basically, any configuration with at least 4 wraps around the running part of the rope can function as a friction...
