From what I've learned by researching them, it's much easier for a constant load, like a stationary generator, and also for boilers. It's kinda funny that there's more info on how to run a car on a gasifier than a boiler, i guess because cars are safer to work on. When stirling engine...

Best way to do refractory is hire a gunnite crew to come shoot it on. That or build a wood form and just pour it. It's like cement, but made for the heat. That's about as good as I'm gonna be able to help, I'm a fitter, boilers are done by boilermakers, and gunnite is laborers i believe. I...

Thats a cool splitter, i thought he meant for advancing the logs to the cut off saw. Woops

That would create end bind for the saw, and the piece wouldn't fall into the splitter part perfectly. There is a reason everyone that builds these wastes the time and money to build a conveyor. That takes a hydraulic motor, hoses roller assemblies etc, but it's worth it because it works the...

Its like cutting trees, you don't need to be an arborist, but the rabbit hole goes as deep as you want to follow it. I will say be very very careful around tanks. Lots of people knew just enough to get themselves killed doing that. Any explosive vapors or dust can turn something into a bomb...

Never too late Burn, a lincoln stick welder would look great in your shop!

I'm far from an expert in anything, just a student of doing stuff. Welding is one of those things that after you learn just a bit of it, you wonder how you got anything done before. Want to modify a trailer to hold a toolbox? Or maybe add rake pockets on the chipper. Fix broken tools, make...

Nice to meet you Bob, glad to see there's another fitter here :) And with a name like blacksmith i assume you do some forging as well, which is awesome because i was going to start messing around with that as well. This forum keeps getting better and better! :onfire:

Exactly. Pulsed ss is awesome. Before you would run so fast you would go home and just pass out because of the concentration needed. Now it just flows in there, and has a spray arc, which is super stable with no spatter. They have pulsed tig too, which in my opinion is only needed on orbital...

Lol yes sir :) Bob are you a ua member as well? And yes that's what pulse is, stabilizing the arc with spikes of higher amperage then cooling off the puddle, which lowers heat input.

Well played sir, some forms can. However when attempting to repair cyclical heated ss, the problem exists why did it crack in the first place. Sometimes it's just corrosion, but when is used in heating applications it's usually from expanding and contracting in service, which work hardens it...

And because i feel the need to detail this again, here's some pics of me prepping xray weld repairs on rope axcess. lol. 6" sch 80, tig root stick out, had to do some of them with a mirror.

Lol that would be fun Paul, but unfortunately that's not even the answer. This is gonna be a long post, sorry. Heres a pic of me earlier today attempting to weld 316 ss pipes that are used to heat a cleaning step in a paint facility. I would weld the cracks or holes, but then after 30 mins or...

I have a few of a huge boiler for a college campus i was involved with a few years ago. You can actually see the firebrick and refractory lining, as well as it lighting up on diesel (backup fuel source). 2 of these boilers heats the entire campus, hot water and cooking included, as well as...

Forget the ss, 321 is ungodly expensive and is used in chemical plants for corrosion resistance at high temps, but only up to 1500 f or so. You will be wayyyyyyy past that, so you will just get precipitation hardening and cracking, at which point it is non repairable because the chrome is...

It's a very cool concept (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_preta) and is a proven one with technology that actually exists on a commercial scale today. If I'm not mistaken all existing coal fired power plants gasify the coal before burning in the boilers (it's how they use all the energy...

Paul, that is an awesome idea. The world is changing as it always does, but what's different now is that information can be passed around the world instantly and for free. This forum is a wonderful example. And many guys who cut trees for money or fun are also tinkerers and builders. Patent law...
