Excellent point, Sean. Thanks! Taking the totality of each tree's situation/other challenges into account will help us make the best decisions about which ones to keep...

    ash in real trouble?

Hi, all: Just to close the loop on this... Indy Ash LINK came out to take a look and determined that this tree (and four others on the property) are relatively healthy and excellent candidates for treatment. There are 10 ash total. The other five break down as 2 that would LIKELY respond to...

    ash in real trouble?

I climbed and cut much of the deadwood out of this tree today. More details HERE. As I was climbing, I found this flaw at about 20-25' on the back side, away from where the original photos were taken. Doesn't bode well, huh?

Wow! Thanks for such a detailed and thoughtful response, Ian. Dinner is on us, if you and your son ever make it to town! The zoo and Treestuff ARE worth the trip. Can you tell me what went into your company's decision not to climb EAB trees? Will you not climb them at all, or does the ban apply...

    ash in real trouble?

Ian, judging from the pictures (which admittedly are not great), do you believe the tree can be saved?

    ash in real trouble?

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Tim! I'm going to see how the deadwooding goes and make a decision from there. I'll have to rig some of the larger branches, given that there are a few young trees/bushes underneath. If I don't make a complete bollocks of that, I may try to go further. Thing...

Not out of line at all, Ian! My thanks to you--and everybody else who's replied. Super helpful as always!

    ash in real trouble?

To your point, there is a lot of "competition" in my yard. Limbs in the understory do not get a lot of light. I think there is a "race to the top" going on! (Though, OTOH, the young maple to its left is doing pretty well!)

    ash in real trouble?

Roger! Wiil do. I'll clean out the deadwood and then keep an eye on the overall health of the tree. If it continues to decline, I'll get a pro to take a look. Pretty sure that I see the "D" shaped exit wounds at the base, though.

    ash in real trouble?

Thanks, guys. Peter, after poking around that link, these PDFs are helpful: Managing Emerald Ash Borer: Decision Guide My Ash Tree is Dead...Now What Do I Do? My tree looks more like the unhealthy pictures than the healthy one. For now, I think I'll deadwood it for safety's sake before...

    ash in real trouble?

Hi, guys: Hope you can steer me the right way on this one... Pretty sure this tree in my yard (center of frame) has EAB. The branches marked in red below are dead or dying. Numbers 1, 2, and 4 (L to R) are stone dead--no leaves, peeling bark. While the center right branch (#3) has some...
