I wonder the friction difference between polished leather and metal.

They are made with an end cap, fwiw.

It's not a ring and ring, but the leather ones work pretty well, once polished by a rope, compared to nothing. Works for some rigging, too. Doesn't sound like what you're wanting, but a cobbler might sew it, and it's not life supporting.
