Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

Dave, on the chain I sent you the top witness mark is at 20 degrees instead of 35, it is marked for square filing.

Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

Glad you're taking advantage of it, Dave. I tried but never could get the performance out of square filed chain that was promised. Every single time I could hit the teeth with three strokes of a round file and it would cut faster. My latest two rolls are round ground chisel so I don't have to...

72 driver, you got it Al. I've lost your mailing address. Can you pm it to me please?

'Rocky'? Do we know each other from another forum? ;) I'm using all Stihl chain, the Oregon is too soft. And I owe Al a favor or three after the last gift he sent me. :)

Al, you need a couple loops of factory square ground? Regular or skip? I have either in 3/8" .050. Just tell me a link count and I'll spin it up for you. :)

Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

The witness mark on the factory square ground is at 20 degrees. It looks almost perpendicular to the tooth.

You could pick up a new chain (looks like you're due soon anyway) and compare to that. If your local dealer doesn't stock square ground chain, then PM me and I'll make you a chain off my roll.

The ghost of chainsaw past looking on in the background approves.

Larry, that looks way off. The top plate angle and side plate angle should meet at the leading corner of the tooth. It looks like yours is a quarter inch too low. Here's a closeup I saved from AS years ago. I think gypologger posted it edit: Actually, Swe#kipp's pictures above are much better...

Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

Larry, In my limited experience, the square filed chain is about 5%-10% faster. This is comparing off-the-roll and 1-2 sharpenings of Stihl 33RS versus Stihl 33RSLK. After more than a couple sharpenings, my square filing begins to suffer and I just round file it. I can take square filed to round...

Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

I picked up a dozen Woodsman double bevel files off the 'specials' page at Bailey's a few months ago. Should last me for a while. I just checked and they aren't listed any more, just the Pferd for $20 more. http://www.baileysonline.com/itemdetail.asp?item=15070+DZ&catID=

Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

Hey Dave, I'll give you an update on how I've progressed with it. After 3-4 tries filing it using the method you said (filing the same direction as round filing), I noticed that my corners weren't lining up very well. So I started throwing the saw in the bench vise and attacking it from the...
